Sailing Route

Arctic Haute Route

The Arctic Haute Route runs along the Atlantic coast between Lofoten and Tromsø, dropping anchor at the best islands for summit tours in Arctic & Coastal Norway. Sailing aboard the magnificent M/S Sjøveien expedition ship that operated in Greenland and Svalbard in the past.

We sail to small places that larger boats can't access. Several of the destinations we visit have either no or limited accommodation or skiing infrastructure, which means we are alone in the mountains and make the first tracks.

Day 1 – Norwegian Adventure Company
Arrivalday Lofoten

Day 1

Welcome to the most beautiful island kingdom in the world, Lofoten! M/S Sjøveien is ready to explore the coast of Arctic & Coastal Norway starting from Svolvær, the capital of Lofoten. In this picturesque fishing village there are many historical and cultural places to visit. If you only have a few hours before departure we recommend a walk along the quay and lunch with the splendid views from the jetty. If you want to experience more of Lofoten, tours and excursions can be arranged in advance.

M/S Sjøveien is docked at the Brekken pier next to Magic Ice and Vestfjord hotel, a few hundred meters south of the Hurtigrute quay. Check in from 18:00 and departure at 20:00. From Svolvær we are heading north, taking a leisurely sail into the Austnesfjord, to the heart of all classic routes in Lofoten where we anchor up for the night. Dinner from Arctic Adventure Cuisine is served at 20:30 and information - and guide meeting begins at 22:00. Get a good night's sleep before tomorrow's ski touring adventures!

Day 2 – Norwegian Adventure Company
Lofoten

Day 2

First day of skiing! Breakfast is served from 07:30. In Lofoten and Austnesfjorden we use tenders to ferry guests to the base of various mountains. Alternative route options include Kvittind, Sauetind, Pilan, Torskmannen or other suitable mountains in the area. There are many possibilities and the days weather, conditions and group ability determine the chosen route.

The first day we plan trips with a difficulty level 3-4 on our scale up to 5. The ski touring hikes take 4-5 hours and are approx. 5-700 vertical metres in elevation. For those who want longer hikes and a faster pace, we can organise this. Independent excursions such as kayaking, fishing, sea eagle safaris, "vær-vandring" in Henningsvær or gallery visits to Lofotens Hus gallery og Kaviar Factory gallery can be arranged.

After a long day you can test the temperature in the fjord with a quick dip, or go straight to apres-ski and enjoy the great social atmosphere on board before dinner at 19:00. At 16:00 we sail from Lofoten setting a course north towards Andørja, dropping anchor before midnight. Ready for a new day of skiing!

Day 3 – Norwegian Adventure Company
Andørja

Day 3

We anchor in a fantastic fjord, observing the mountains we will climb later. Take the first coffee of the day on the deck and enjoy the view! Breakfast starts from 07:30. This is the day we'll explore the mountains of Andørja and Rolla. Andørja is Northern Europe's most mountainous island with more than ten peaks over 1000 metres, giving a wide array of ski touring possibilities.

We'll arrange trips with a difficulty level of 3-4 on our scale up to 5. The tours take 4-5 hours, and are approx. 6-700 vertical metres in elevation. If anyone in the group wants a longer hike, we suggest that one or more groups walk for 5+ hours, up to approx. 8-900 metres altitude. This gives a combined hike up two or more mountain peaks, with a difficulty level of 4 on our scale up to 5.

After the tour we return to our floating lodge and enjoy apres-ski with a local snack before dinner at 19:00.

During the afternoon we set sail to the north and, if we are lucky, get to experience the northern Lights. We drop anchor off Kvaløya just before midnight.

Day 4 – Norwegian Adventure Company
Senja

Day 4

Breakfast is served from 07:30. Today's tours are organised based on the current weather and snow conditions. Our guides tailor make tours, dependent upon ability, for new beginners through to highly experienced skiers.

We'll arrange trips with a difficulty level of 3-4 on our scale up to 5. The tours take 4-5 hours, and are approx. 6-700 vertical metres in elevation. If anyone in the group wants a longer trip, we suggest that one group walks for 5-6 hours, with a difficulty level of 4-5 on our scale up to 5.

After a long day, you can test the temperature in the fjord with a quick dip. Alternatively go straight for after-ski and enjoy a local snack along with the good atmosphere onboard before dinner at 19:00. At 16:00 we sail south and arrive in Kvaløya at approx. 23:00. With luck, we'll experience the Northern Lights on the journey!

Day 5 – Norwegian Adventure Company
Kvaløya

Day 5

Your final day starts in spectacular fashion with a ski tour on Kvaløya. The guides organise tours that are right for you based on the day's weather and conditions. We take tenders to the shore, and immediately begin the summit treks from the shoreline.

We'll arrange trips with a difficulty level of 3-4 on our scale up to 5. The trips take approx. 3- 4 hours, and are approx. 700 vertical metres in height.

You'll check out from the ship in the morning before we land ashore, leaving the luggage that will be transported straight to the airport. After the tours guests are taken directly to the airport, arriving at 15:00. The luggage shipped earlier will be made available.

If you are tired and a little achy it is possible to explore Tromsø, go dog sledding or take in other sights in the surrounding area. If you have the energy to stay with us for a few extra days of adventure and treks, we'll arrange this in the area around Tromsø or Lyngen.

Life onboard

Social, after-ski and plenty of 'hygge'

Imagine how incredible it is to sail into the fjords and to lie at anchor surrounded by the landscape of the next day's tour. Get up at sunrise and enjoy the first coffee out on the deck. Watch a couple of small fishing boats slowly pass by on their way to the fishing grounds, prepare for the weather and be on your way. In every aspect the Arctic Haute Route is a very unique form of Arctic alpine holiday in the north.

Arctic Haute Route – Norwegian Adventure Company

Being on an Arctic Haute Route voyage is much more than a raw nature experience with amazing ski-touring. The voyage along the Norwegian coast, gives you the chance to see some of the most beautiful places in the north. In addition, there is a great social environment and plenty of ‘hygge’ (playful happiness) where you can share skiing adventures, fun experiences and your "passion" for an active lifestyle with other like-minded people.

On a small, intimate ship you quickly get to know the others in the group, and after a day or two we are one big happy family! The Norwegian Adventure Company team are always available for any questions you may have along the way, and the ship's crew are attentive and helpful.

You’re in safe hands with our certified guides who are knowledgeable local area experts and you’ll certainly learn some new tricks. Every afternoon we serve local snacks from the region for après-ski, followed by dinner and local dining experiences from Arctic Adventure Cuisine.

During afternoons and evenings, light snow falls and sunsets are best experienced with others on the deck, where you feel the wind, weather and the sheer joy of being on tour.

Level of difficulty

How difficult are the summit ski tours?

The most common questions we get asked is how tiring and long our summit ski tours are and how steep the descents are. This is not easy to answer as for each individual there is a different experience of what is deemed to be simple or demanding. Our guides will always seek to adjust according to the group, but as it is a group tour a certain level is expected. You will be out ski touring 5-8 hours a day, the speed is lower than skimo, we want you to enjoy the views. For the decents you must be able to ski in terrain with 25-30 degrees angle. Avalanche risk, snow conditions and weather will determine where we ski. To try to give guidance we have graded our tours on a scale from 1 to 5. Both Arctic Haute Route and Ski touring weekend is on level 3-5.

Arctic Haute Route – Norwegian Adventure Company
1 Up to 300 metres altitude Easy summit trip that everyone can master. You must have ski-touring gear, avalanche gear and a hiking bag.

3 Up to 700 metres altitude A more strenuous summit trip, for those in normal to good condition. You must have ski-touring gear, avalanche gear and a hiking bag.
4 Up to 1000 metres altitude It is required that you are in good shape and that you regularly take long hikes. You must have ski-touring gear, avalanche gear and a hiking bag.
5 More than 1000 metres altitude It is required that you are in very good condition and that you are used to walking several days on hilly terrain. You must have ski-touring gear, avalanche gear and a hiking bag.
Equipment and packing list

What to pack for the tour

Pack your ski gear in a large ski bag where you also have room for boots, helmets, skis, etc., and a large North Face bag (waterproof 100-140 L is recommended) for the rest of your gear and clothing. You can take the hiking bag and any boots on board the aircraft.

Bring mountain gear and clothing for three days of trips, and casual outfits for travel, dinner and social occasions. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and the cabins are small, so make a capsule collection and leave your fancy clothes at home!
